A memorable day was a route direct from our Hotel Marbell in Soller to the bay location of Cala Tuent. We set off on this particular day from the Port directly up into the hills and mountain hinterland of the NW region of Majorca up to a Mirador (viewing point) in fine weather as part of the C Grade walk for that day. Heading down after the initial ascent we came across a farm where freshly squeezed oranges were available, to take our break amongst fruit trees in a deep valley offering good shade from the by-then strong sunshine. Everyone was in good spirits and our guide maintained a comfortable pace with a light touch – well done!
Out of this secluded valley and up to a col into tree cover again to be rewarded with a wonderful view of the Mediterranean in clear shades of blue and turquoise – a fine reward for the effort. The now coastal path a few hundred metres above sea level winding in around rock exposures and tree cover all the way to our destination of Cala Tuent, and more importantly a glass of beer. The restaurant / bar was well situated with superb views and an excellent menu and, the now expected, attentive service.
Everyone, now refreshed and ready, ascended from the bay via our bus and traversed an extremely exposed narrow road offering cracking views back into the harbour location. After 20 minutes of this hairy exodus it was realised we had to turn around to retrieve our local guide Juan, a charming knowledgeable Catalan, so not having the stomach for a three point turn on a precipice many of us alighted and let the coach driver perform his heroics to perfection – hence our impromptu break in the attached photo – until he returned all fully laden and we set off again for Soller. A big thanks also to our C Grade Guide – a lovely, able bloke.
The day was completed in the evening with a wonderful Majorcan buffet prepared by the hotel, of a combination of cold and hot buffet with a memorable Majorcan soup in which the liquid is almost fully absorbed into the vegetable contents – a dry soup! The hotel staff were, as always, punctual and courteous in serving with fresh produce and home cooking – take a bow!
