The first thing worth mentioning is Hassness’ wonderful location, where it sits on the shore of Buttermere and with an excellent range of walks leading off into the surrounding fells. It was also clear that the accommodation had recently been refurbished, so that combined with the excellent meals and friendly staff all made for a very cosy stay over Christmastime.
We had a fair range of weather conditions during our stay, everything from the odd occasional sunny spell, to heavy squalls and high winds – but given the character of the Lake District that all added to the fun and challenge, and we enjoyed a good and well graded walk each day. Our leader, Julian, always worked out a good route.
The highest we went was on our “free day” when Julian led us up to Esk Haus, but deep snow and low cloud dissuaded us from carrying on with our planned route over Glaramara. So instead we headed back via Sprinkling and Styhead Tarns – a real treat in itself.
The highlight walk of the week was the walk we did on Christmas Day when we walked from Hassness and up to Haystacks. A real gem of a walk and fell.
So in all a very pleasant way of spending the Christmas holiday in good company. And it is also worth mentioning the delight of enjoying the home-made cakes the staff at Hassness laid on to welcome us back from our walks.
