Lanzarote: A Photographer’s Impression

Lanzarote: A Photographer’s Impression

At the end of February I escaped from the cold, grey UK and went with Ramblers to Lanzarote. A flight of less than four hours transported me to this sunny, volcanic land, the most northerly of the Canary Islands.

Our hotel in Arrecife, the island’s capital, was very comfortable and made an excellent base from which to explore all that this island has to offer. We were a large group and able to choose either D or D+ grades of walk on a daily basis. Our leaders, Graham and Alun, did an excellent job of leading and organising so that everything ran smoothly.

Exhilarating walks up in the hills, through valleys, and along the coast all ended at a bar with a very welcome beer! There were coffee stops, too, in the pretty whitewashed villages.

Some of our party braved the wind-whipped Atlantic waves, but not me. I preferred to take time off with my camera, taking photos of the spectacular mountain vistas, palm groves, green lagoons and reptilian wildlife.

I must thank our leader Graham, in particular, for indulging this passion of mine and taking time on our walks to point out the occasional camera shy lizard darting amongst the rocks! The sunsets, directly viewed from our hotel, were irresistible for anyone with a camera. They were glorious.

Evening meals were taken in the hotel and out in restaurants. They were always good and plentiful. Some of us continued our ‘socialising’ in a bar at the top of a neighbouring hotel, the only high rise building in Lanzarote, which afforded a magnificent view of Arrecife and its bay. A wonderful place, indeed, to soak up a cocktail and the view!

A holiday with Ramblers is, of course, not merely about walking. It’s also about companionship and the sharing of experiences. I found myself, as usual on these trips, amongst friendly and enthusiastic people who contributed immensely to my enjoyment of this Lanzarote holiday.

I’ve no reason to believe my next Ramblers holiday will be any less enchanting!
