The fabulous fiesta ‘A Taste of Spain & her Islands’ at Lemsford Mill over the weekend 28 and 29 June, was a brilliant success.
The biggest event ever hosted by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, was housed in an elegant marquee positioned on the lawn in the midst of the Mill’s lush garden greenery.
Planning for the event began months prior, in discussion with the Spanish Tourist Board and all its various tourism regions.
Ticket sales for the event started slowly but soon built up steam and captured everyone’s imagination once the tourist offices, Heart FM and Smooth Radio and BBC Three Counties radio all got on board. Paul Dixon from BBC Three Counties also came along on Saturday to broadcast live from Lemsford.
Super Spanish holidays
We were happy to secure the attendance of colleagues from the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Andalucia and Murcia; together covering more than 80% of our portfolio of Spanish walking holidays.
We were thrilled that Beth Noble from Fred. Olsen also joined us at the event and was kept busy with guests keen to learn more about our Cruise & Walk programme. Beth was assisted by three of our Cruise & Walk specialists, Chris & Gilian Browne and Roger Calver.
Guests were also able to shop for award-winning outdoor wear from Keela with Peter Cowie who came down from Glasgow
Super Spanish flavours and music
Food and wine is such a major attraction for all holiday makers to Spain and we were keen to showcase the very best. We were very fortunate to partner with Iberica, a renowned London restaurant group, who use only the very best of Spanish produce and ingredients in all that they do. Freshly carved Iberico ham from Andalucia as well as lovingly prepared paella, tapas and mini sweet desert rice pots were accompanied by excellent white and red wine.
In addition, David and Emma Isley from our favourite Alpujarras hotel Las Chimineas were kind enough to arrange for two of their staff to travel from Spain to the UK for the first time so they could all come and join us. They provided the most mouth-watering tapas that many of us have ever tasted.
Also helping to create that special fiesta atmosphere over both days was the authentic Spanish band El Perca, which we all so much enjoyed.
Camino de Lemsford
And what about the walking? Over 200 guests enjoyed the three walks on both Saturday and Sunday, along the “Camino de Lemsford”. They were led on Saturday by Fred & Karen Groenewald, who also lead our South African and Italian holidays, Bill Cooper, Martin Hunt and our Itineraries Manager, Michael Hatch. Bill and Martin were joined on Sunday by our Product Development Manager David Kay. Another of our leaders, Steve Lodge, also joined the team to talk about his bird watching & walking holiday to Extremadura & Coto Doñana in Southern Spain.
By the end of Sunday afternoon our unflagging Ramblers Worldwide team had welcomed and entertained over 300 guests, many of whom are planning or have already booked, their next holiday with us.
“Just to let you know how much Fred and I enjoyed the Taste of Spain Day yesterday. We went on the morning walk which was very pleasant and interesting, the paella lunch and wine was very good and we booked a cruise and walk holiday for May 2015! Thanks you to you and all your colleagues involved in arranging this event for such a lovely day.”
“Good walk, good food, good company – just like a Ramblers holiday!”
