Rhine Castles and Vineyards 13 – 20 May, 2012
Another good Ramblers Worldwide Holidays’ trip that provided nice wanderings in the heart of what turned out to be very picturesque Rhineland. The walks were well graded and on most days led us along the sides of the Rhine and its neighbouring hillsides.
We also enjoyed passing through many pretty little villages and towns, and as well as past the castles that dot the entire area. There were many fine medieval buildings and churches, and nice stops for refreshments during the walks.
Although I am a keen walker I have to admit that the included midweek boat transfer between our bases at Boppard and Rudesheim was a real treat. A four and a half hour sail along what is said to be the prettiest stretch of the Rhine and its many castles.
The presence of Rhineland river cruise boats testified to this being one of the main draws, but I dare say we were enjoying it all for a much lower price than folk paid on those other boats.
That leads me on to mention the hotels we stayed in. Both of them were good and we enjoyed hearty breakfasts and dinners each day.
I had approached this trip with a degree of reservation when I heard the group was going to be large (23 people in all) but the paths were quite straightforward and our ever-helpful leader, Rosemary, always kept things happily ticking along at a pleasant pace.
In all, a good trip and one well worth considering if you fancy wandering through some of the finest of the Rhineland’s scenery and culture.
