Hi, I’m Kath Bensen and I love leading for Ramblers Worldwide Holidays in many wonderful destinations. Next spring and summer should be a real treat, as I’m looking forward to leading in Santorini and Naxos again. These 2 Greek islands make a perfect combination, only a short ferry journey apart but offering a complete contrast.
Santorini has a unique blend of dramatic volcanic landscape, inviting blue seas, and a fascinating history, possibly the source of legendary lost Atlantis. Our walks take in relatively undiscovered villages and donkey paths, as well as the spectacular sights that have made Santorini such a favourite destination. Back at our hotel, I love to swim in the pool at the end of the day (and last year there were tame kittens, too!).
A surprise to many, Naxos is a real walkers’ paradise. The largest of the Cyclades, with the highest mountains, it offers a fabulous variety of superb walks . Mulepaths take us into wild mountain landscapes and gentle paths follow refreshing streams. There are stunning views of craggy peaks, monasteries, fertile olive groves, and distant islands over the blue sea. Some of the walks take us to sandy beaches for a refreshing dip, while others explore enticing mountain villages where traditional farming still flourishes.
Spectacular scenery, great walks, fascinating traces of ancient civilisation… And how could I forget the friendly tavernas serving traditional local produce, and the excellent wines produced in both Santorini and Naxos – or the friendliness of local people! These islands have that special thing that makes Greece so addictive to many, a sense of contentment, relaxation, enjoyment of each day.
See you Santorini and Naxos?
