Discovering Cultural Istanbul

Istanbul is a vibrant city straddling not only the Bosporus and Golden Horn, but also different cultures, and has retained many of its historical buildings and artifacts. The Ramblers Worldwide Holidays programme ‘A Cultural Week in Istanbul’ beautifully captures these different facets and manages to include many varied experiences in a busy week using, as a base, a good centrally located hotel.

Inspiring Istanbul

We had a wonderful week in Istanbul, with perfect weather for rambling around. It’s a fascinating city and struck me as surprisingly western, despite the ubiquitous head scarves and more complete forms of cover (burqa, chador, niqab, hijab – the definitions seem to be rather complicated).

The Turkish Delights of Istanbul

This must be the most effective way of seeing Istanbul in a week. A dream for history buffs, the programme facilitated appreciation of many mosques with their historical tiles and mosaics, amazing palaces and harems, a basilica and a fairly recently abandoned aqueduct that had been in operation from the 5th Century (the design may be useful in south east England right now!).

Exploring the Bosphorus in Istanbul

Sun shining and locals dining – what a phenomenal first glimpse of Istanbul. Our warm welcome in Istanbul began immediately as we exited the airport and observed the people of Istanbul enjoying the weather by the Bosphorus.
