To avoid having the sun actually ruin your walking experience only requires some simple preparation and common sense precautions.
All experienced walkers will tell you that while you are on a trekking holiday your skin is very vulnerable. A high quality sun block of a least an SPF 30 will help prevent painful sun burn and its consequential risk of skin cancer. Be sure to apply a generous layer over your face and all exposed areas (including the back of the legs) before you set out for your day of walking. A waterproof formula is preferable as sweat will quickly wash away sunblock leaving you unprotected very quickly.
It is also important to remember that even on a cloudy day the harmful UV rays from the sun are just as strong as ever. Applying sun block as part of your daily walking preparation is the best way to get into the habit of wearing it and never forgetting it. If you have a particular sensitivity or aversion to these protective creams it is possible to find clothing that has UV protection built in. These garments can also be used as just another additional layer of protection if your trekking holiday is taking you to wide open exposed landscapes that have little shade.
Lastly, don’t forget your eyes. A good, high quality pair of sunglasses are a walker’s best friend on sunny days. Not only will they protect your eyes from potential damage they will also eliminate the need to squint to see all the beautiful scenery you will surely find on your holiday.
