Tour of Monte Rosa

Tour of Monte Rosa

Tour of Monte Rosa – July 9th – 23rd

We scrambled up to the Monte Moro pass (2796m) on the Swiss/Italian border on Day 2 – our first pass of the trip, through snow, and over rock and boulders. It’s our first serious climb of the trip and it feels quite an effort because we’re not used to that altitude yet. After spending the night in the Rifugio Gaspare Oberto on the pass, we are rewarded by a brilliant, clear morning and our first views of Monte Rosa. We all take the option of scrambling up the Joderhorn (3037m) – a very nice satisfying peak.

Rifugio Gaspare Oberto and Monte RosaAfter a long haul, along the impressively engineered route over the Colle del Turlo, we arrive in the late afternoon at the idyllic Rifugio Pastore, with the sound of waterfalls and cow bells. In the evening, Monte Rosa emerges from the clouds, and there were even better views the following morning.Rifugio Pastore

Two nights at the Rifugio Ferraro at Rezy (2072m), another unspoilt spot, with excellent food (both quantity and quality) and atmosphere. On our free day most of us walk up the Palon di Resy (2675m), an easy climb, but rewarded with fantastic glacier and summit views. Afterwards, down to the Resy lakes, where 5 of us can’t resist an impromptu skinny dip – we quickly dry off in the hot sunshine.

Stunning views of Il Cervino/Matterhorn, from Italian, as well as the classic Swiss side. We first see Il Cervino in the clouds, after going over the Colle de Croux, on the approach to Cervinia. The mountain dominates Cervinia, so the following day (brilliant weather) we have uninterrupted views as we climb up to the Teodulo pass. In the evening from the Teodulo hut (3317m), on our highest pass and the highest hut, Il Cervino dominates the view from the hut’s dinning room window and terrace. We watch as the sun sets and the light fades. The following morning (another brilliant day), we cross the Theodul glacier and see the Swiss side of the Matterhorn for the first time. We continue to have perfect Matterhorn views for the next two days.
