The Azores was created by volcanic activity. The effects of this volatile genesis can be witnessed both above and below ground with almost 300 hundred volcanic cavities having been surveyed, and a landscape filled with crater lakes and thermal water springs. Many walking holidays in the Azores guide visitors to the mountain of Pico which still has its majestic cone intact.
The Azores have numerous hydro-thermal resources which have been exploited for their healing properties for centuries. While on walking holidays in the Azores one of the highlights for travellers is visiting any one of these springs of natural carbonic water, iron water pools or waterfalls. The most popular ones are the thermal baths Termas da Ferraria and the iron water pools in Furnas found on the island of Sao Miguel.
