Springtime, of course, produced an abundance of wild flowers, and, while not a specific reason for our holiday, the presence of two amateur botanists in our group, whose “Springtime in Crete” holiday booked for the previous week had been cancelled due to volcanic ash, and their excited cries every time they found a new and rare flower, soon had us all appreciating the wonders that surrounded us.
As with most Ramblers Worldwide Holidays we had a day off and what did we do? We went walking. Our visit to the Island coincided with the opening of the Samaria Gorge for the new summer season on the first of May. So our very helpful guide made last minute arrangements for us to walk the gorge which must surely appear in many ramblers lists of ‘1000 things to do before I die’. We were up at 5.30 am to start at 8.30 and thoroughly enjoyed the eleven mile walk through some truly breathtaking scenery.
And then there were the tavernas. Our comfortable hotel only did bed and a very good breakfast, so all evening meals were taken in tavernas in Chania where we were based. Each evening a different taverna and each evening different culinary delights to tickle our palates, usually washed down with a complimentary glass of Raki, the local fire water. Where possible we also had a taverna stop midday. All tavernas were carefully selected by our Ramblers Worldwide Holiday leader which ensured a welcoming reception wherever we went.
All in all one of the best holidays I have had with Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, and one last memorable point. Our visit to Crete coincided with the orange harvest. As a result fresh orange juice was available everywhere and there is nothing like fresh juice straight from the trees!
